Artists: Camera Obscura, Georgie James

Venue: Cat’s Cradle, Chapel Hill, NC

Date: July 11, 2006

Whenever I see a show at the Cradle, I always feel a tinge of regret for all the shows I must have missed during high school. Oh well, I guess my 1-show-a-week schedule in New York is really making up for lost time.

But enough of the regret — time now to get excited about my first show in nearly 3 months!! Whoo! Yea! And actually, I was much more excited than this because Camera Obscura had been on repeat for nearly a month now. When they came on stage, I was a little surprised to see how big they were (6 people) and how old. But mostly I was transfixed by Tracey Anne Campbells’ melancholic expression (that’s visible in most of their music videos). Her face really feels like it’s been through a lot, and adds much more credibility to her singing.

The band, and Tracey Anne in particular, seemed to be very nervous, and they restarted a song 4 times before they got it right, but once they got going, it was simply wonderful. In fact, there’s really nothing else to say, because the performance was simply perfect — certainly not technically, but emotionally and in all the ways that matter.
