Artist: Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins

Venue: Irving Plaza, NYC, NY

Date: March 19, 2006

Possibly as a reaction to the glut of indie rock music I’ve been listening to recently, I find myself feeling slightly jaded by much of the “traditional” indie rock, and getting more interested in other (related) areas, such as some folk-country. Thus, Jenny Lewis’ solo efforts (as opposed to her work as lead singer of Rilo Kiley) are a perfect place to get my feet wet, since her brand of folk/country is still close enough to indie rock for me to be able to appreciate it. Her concert as a solo performer was in some ways similar to her Rilo Kiley performance (see near the bottom, during my Seattle concerts), but just more sedate (no less expressive, fortunately). She ran through most of the album, along with a few covers and some instrumentals by her supporting band. The Watson Twins, btw, were only one step above being merely eye candy: they would occasionally ooh and aah in pitch along with Jenny; other than that, they were literally just on stage together swaying their bodies and just looking good. The presence of the supporting band added much to the liveliness of the evening, and made the music much more engaging than the starker album. Finally, though, it just comes down to Jenny’s great voice and great attitude at these shows that makes it all worthwhile.
