Artist: Amina
Venue: Joe’s Pub, NYC, NY
Date: February 8, 2006
Being so impressed with them when they opened for Sigur Ros last year, I decided to go catch a show featuring Amina. The venue was a tiny (but classy-looking) joint that’s somehow associated with the Public Theatre of NY. The place was surprisingly packed for such relative unknowns as Amina, but I’d wager that most people probably saw them Sigur Ros, just like I did. Also, there was some opening solo guitarist, but he kinda sucked.
Amina’s set was similar to their Sigur Ros opening, but longer. It was nice to be in a much more intimate setting, and it allowed me to more fully appreciate their chemistry together. There’s something a little odd about them, as they seem to be simultaneously like little schoolgirls (as judged by their expressions of glee at times) and like old “aunties” (as judged perhaps by their clothing, and their expression during more sedate moments). I also noticed that they were well multi-talented, frequently switching instruments. Their show once again highlighted the inadequacy of recordings to convey the essence of many bands’ music, since the live element adds so much. Unfortunately, their set was cut slightly short due to one of their laptops crashing, but they were able to reboot the machine and then play a couple more tunes for their encore.
