Artist: Dresden Dolls

Venue: Webster Hall, NYC, NY

Date: October 28, 2005

THIS is the way a show should be. Lots of theatrical playing, an acrobatic dancer on two tightropes hanging from the ceiling above the crowd, a quick Pantera live cover on acoustic guitar, and a mini-orchestra conducted by a mad surgeon/psycho killer with enough blood on his clothes to feed an army of vampires for a week. Yes, I imagine some of it was probably for halloween, but I have a feeling that much of the underlying excitement is present at all of their shows. After all, any act that sells shirts proclaiming themselves to be “Punk Cabaret” better have a show to back it up, right? Also, the drummer/guitar player looked a lot like The Joker from Batman: The Animated Series (not only his face paint, but his manner as well). His drumming was amazing in concert: very crisp and punctuated the singer’s dramatic style very well. There were also some bonuses, such as a human-mechanical boy that was brought out for “Coin-Operated Boy”, a goth bride who came out and threw roses (omg I caught a rose! I’m going to be the next to marry a zombie!!), and of course, the orchestra. All the orchestra members were dressed up in costume (the clarinetist was a pirate, I think), and they fit the music so well, I wish some of the recordings featured them. The first track they accompanied Dresden Dolls on was a cover of “One”, probably the best cover of that song I’ve heard (followed by Aimee Mann’s version on Magnolia soundtrack). The show gets an ‘A’ for effort and an ‘A++’ for results.
