Artists: Of Montreal, MGMT
Venue: Cat’s Cradle, Chapel Hill, NC
Date: August 23, 2005
In my short 10 day visit to Chapel Hill before I left for NYC, I managed to catch one last concert with Alex. Having only heard their most recent album, I was anxious to see how I would like them live. We got to the Cradle and found a notice saying the show was postponed by several hours because the lead singer’s flight had been delayed. After somehow killing the time before the show, the opening band called The Management (or MGMT for short) came on. They were two guys, kids really, wearing really funny clothes (looking like wanna-be thugs, but ending up looking like little poser-punks). Their show started and I started laughing: they didn’t play any instruments and their singing was terrible (but energetic). However, the music that played through the speakers (I don’t even know if they produced that music or just stole it from somewhere) had something to it that I really liked (despite being very poppy and dancey). Alex will probably never forgive me for liking that, but oh well, I had a good time.
Finally Of Montreal came on and thoroughly rocked us. I can best describe them as some weird mix between dancey-pop and indie rock that nevertheless is very good. They showed the right amount of energy on stage, and the main singer was a little strange, dressing as he did in what looked to me like a girl’s top (it was skin-tight and the back was mostly open!), and dancing excitedly. The other people in the band were great too, working excitedly on the synthesizers or drums or whatever. All-in-all, it was a good end to the most rocking summer ever…
