Artists: The Secret Machines, Kings Of Leon

Venue: The Moore Theatre, Seattle, WA

Date: July 16, 2005

This was the concert I was looking forward to throughout the summer, and unfortunately it was not all I had hoped for. The Secret Machines looked very awesome when they came out, with strong white lights right above them highlighting them in a bright glow, as a strong red lights from the front of the stage bathed their faces in a devilish red glow, creating the effect of bright red faces suspended in the darkness (they were all wearing black clothes). Their setup was also very different, as the drumset player was on the left of the stage facing the piano player on the right of the stage. In between them, the guitar player was standing with a long row of foot pedals for operating all kinds of electronic effects on their music.
Their music, however, was much less impressive, as they did not seem as technically proficient and polished as they did on thier album. They also played several songs from an older album, which were all quite disappointing. Their new songs were frequently off-key and they played through them somewhat automatically. The only great part was their performance of the first track (”First Wave Intact”), which they used as a closer. While I would by no means call it a bad performance, it was only lukewarm at best, a fact which was compounded by our really terrible seats in the balcony, which I think caused a lot of the band’s energy to be lost. I hope to see them again at a better venue, where I’m up close, and where they will hopefully play more songs from the newer album…
