Jamaica, mon! Sunny beaches, Bob Marley, and reefers the size of newspapers are most Americans’ first thoughts upon hearing about this island “paradise.” The truth unfortunately is quite far from this image, as Jimmy Cliff’s great portrayal of a struggling singer in Jamaica shows. Called the greatest Jamaican movie by many (and hugely successful there), this movie has sadly still not caught on in the U.S. much, and it’s unfortunate. A great reggae soundtrack (from somone other than Marley) plays almost as much of a role as do the characters themselves, and I can see influences of this movie on even some recent films (in particular, Cidade De Dios).
