A standout even compared to the stellar films of my film class, Coppola’s true masterpiece is not one of the Godfathers, but rather this lesser-known film (made between Godfather 1 and 2). Gene Hackman is simply stunning, and it’s a shame to see one of his recent films where he’s reduced to a mere shell of the acting god he is in this movie. With one of the most memorable characters I’ve ever seen, Hackman animates this seemingly-simple film about one man’s descent into madness as he comes to grips with the moral implications of his career and the stunning emptyness of his life. With a great soundtrack that contributes as much to the film as the visuals do, Coppola crafted a true gem in this work, which drew me in tightly from the beginning and didn’t let go till long after the end-credits had finished rolling.
