The first of two movies that I watched within the span of a week that made go “holy shit” because of sheer excitement bordering on maniacal glee at the gorgeous filming of a frighteningly dark movie. As my friend Richard recently said, the comics (and therefore the movie, as it is perhaps the only movie where it really feels like the comic was literally just animated and put on screen with live-action heroes painted in) are “totally unrestrained and amazing how something so ugly could be so beautiful.” Forget the pretentious floating plastic bag of American Beauty–real beauty is in the human heart and spirit, and seeing its mirror image in this movie only serves to emphasize the moments of humanity some of the characters exhibit. I won’t say anything much about the cinematography as that’s what everyone is raving about (but in this case, they have a reason to), but I remember feeling such an enormous rush after the movie, a rush unlike anything I’ve felt in a long long time. That was reason enough for liking the film, and I fully believe that the experience matters the most. Any reasoning and analysis necessarily comes afterwards, and can only possibly explain part of the experience–but cannot replace it.

Warning: those without open-minds are going to hate this movie, and it will be completely their loss.
