A worthy and exciting opening to the semester, Hitchcock’s non-stop chase story of mistaken identity still packs quite a wollop and shows that explosions are not needed to make taut action movies (although shootouts on top of Mount Rushmore help ;-)). Blending appropriate amounts of comedy (both high- and low-brow), sexual innuendo (where Hitchcock’s restraint shows that less is more), and of course, suspense, North By Northwest makes a strong case for the old-fashioned chase thriller without all the special effects–and of course with one of the best film score-hooks ever written.
