The second of the aforementioned “holy shit” movies that I watched, for much of the same reasons (despite being a completely different movie)–the rush of excitement that I felt throughout and after the movie. Film-making at its best, this movie borders on cartoon in its shameless rippage from numerous movies and insanely exaggerated CGI effects. Cribbing from, paying respects to, yet at the same time parodying such works as The Matrix, the Blues Brothers, Looney Tunes, westerns, action flicks, underdog movies, and coming-of-age movies, Kung Fu Hustle remains light-hearted throughout, and even its cliched conventions have life in them through the basic humanity and vitality of Stephen Chow (director and main actor, also of Shaolin Soccer fame).
