What a hatchet job of a movie–after learning about the disaster behind the scenes of making this movie, it’s much clearer to me why, despite two watches, I still dislike this movie. There was no clear sense of what was wanted, and the movie suffers drastically as a result. With wild character swings and only a thin veneer of revolutionary thinking overlayed on a thick coat of convenitonality, this movie is easily one of the most pretentious movies ever made. Yes, the androids are almost human-like at the end–let’s all critically re-evaluate our perceptions of machines and artificial intelligence while we continue to treat women like shit and other races as inferior. In fact while we’re at it, let’s make Harrison Ford a really complex character who thinks for an entire 10 seconds before attempting to rape the semi-hot girl and show that he is trying his hardest to “make her human.” Finally, let’s make a really gay (in both senses) ending for the theatrical release that is a complete non-sequitur, and let’s make a pseudo-shocking ending for the director’s cut–neither of which amount to anything remarkable.
