One of the all-time best rappers (along with 2Pac), Nas has proved himself again and again to have some of the illest, most socially conscious, and best narrative lyrics ever written. Although every album he releases is inevitably followed by the critics saying “Nas sold out…this is not Illmatic“, he never really fails to deliver solid material. The only area in which I think he sometimes falls under expectations is his use of melodies from other genres/artists (”Carmina Burana” used in “Hate Me Now”, “Ina Gadda Da Vida” used in “Thief’s Theme”, etc.), but in this regard he’s really no worse than other rap artists. This particular track is one of my favorites from Stillmatic because of Nas’s I’m-the-fucking-best attitude that he’s so good at. Also, the chorus is catchy due to his use of a sample of someone saying “got yourself a gun” to close out every sentence he sings.
