Title: I Hope You Die
Date: March 17, 2005
“You must die. I alone am best!” So begins one of the best comedy/rock albums I’ve ever heard. Not afraid to resort to 4th grade insults or blatantly sexist/racist/elitist lyrics, their songs consistently deliver high-quality, low-brow humour. And sometimes their analogies are really quite brilliant (e.g. “more tongue-in-cheek than a lesbo orgy”). The rock part (of the comedy/rock pairing) is also very strong (quite literally; they play the drums so unapologetically I almost feel like I’m back in the early 90’s with Nirvana et al) as far as rock songs go. They have catchy tunes (“The Discovery Channel Song”, anyone?) and awesome interludes occasionally (the song “Mope” has an interlude where pacman does acid). This song is one of their most brutal–the entire song is one long revenge fantasy about YOU, chronicling how you give some guy the bird, which leads to you eventually sharing a jail cell with a psychopathic bestial-necrophiliac murderer known as “Bowling Ball-Bag Bob.” Incidentally, there’s not really any ambiguity about their intentions, as they’re pretty clear about the meaning of the song: the two choruses are “I hope this helps to emphasize/I hope this helps to clarify/I hope you die” and “Die die die die die die die…”, respectively. Genius.
