Artist: The Dust Brothers

Title: Commissioner Castration

Date: March 16, 2005

From the soundtrack to one of the awesomest movies ever, America’s Dust Brothers (not to be confused with England’s ex-Dust Brothers) prove that they can not only produce an album for themselves (as opposed to for The Beastie Boys), but can make it a cohesive, kick-ass soundtrack as well. I can’t imagine this movie without this soundtrack, and I still remember vividly my early infatuation with this song. The tanpura entrance so familiar to most Indians (as it is the first instrument heard on almost every single Indian Classical performance, used for setting the tonic and the dominant of the Raga that the performer(s) will play in) gives this song that “Far East Asian feel” that Westerners love, but for me, the moment when the drumset kicks in is by far one of the best and most anticipated moments of all the music I listen to. With a steady drive to its finishing fade out, this piece is just about perfect.
