Specious Logic

Thoughts without reason

About

Disorganized thoughts about music and science and film and philosophy and literature and…

2 years ago, my good friend Richard introduced me to this band Interpol. He told me that he felt it was “the most important band of the decade.” Now although it was his wont to exaggerate everything, Richard definitely knows good art when he experiences it, and so I gave them a shot. And I was disappointed. Other than the two singles (”NYC” and “Obstacle 1″), the rest of the album seemed rather lackluster.

2 years and one more album later, I must concede that if Richard wasn’t right, then at the very least he was on the right track. Having listened to the first album (Turn On The Bright Lights) well over a hundred times (complete from beginning to end), and quickly getting there on their second album (Antics), it is hard for me to believe there was ever a time I could not have liked this band. I have often listened to both albums in one sitting, and then felt the need to listen to them again, fully. Very few albums have done that to me (although I might write later about some others that have).

So I must thank Richard from the bottom of my heart for proving me wrong. And if this is not the most important band of the decade (and few people probably think it is, or will be), it doesn’t matter. Because I want to believe.
