Wow, I was blown away by this 4-part discussion of which constitutes “high art” in our times (movies or books). As someone who tries hard to keep up with the tide of amazingly good movies being released year after year (and which shows no signs of being stemmed) [and while many of these are not released for the general public, what is amazing is that some are], I have no doubt you can guess which side of the debate I fall on. However, I still read to keep my skills up [being a computer science major has as one of its serious occupational risks the complete loss of reading ability].
If for no other reason, read part 1 and part 4 (the pro-movie ones) for a mini-review of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that on my scale of 1-5, I would rate this movie a 6 (an “honor” reserved for only a handful of movies).
On a different note, listen to Blonde Redhead if you get a chance.
