I figure it’s about time for an update on my summer.
It still rocks, and since my internship is only until July 31st, I’m already starting to feel like it’s almost over. In fact, work is so awesome, that I’ve generally been coming in around 11 a.m. and staying until 1:30 a.m.!
There’s a group of about 10 interns (including me), who do stuff together throughout the week. We generally have lunch and dinner together, do various activities throughout the week, such as poker night and playing ultimate frisbee, and then go out on weekends. We’ve taken various trips, such as to San Francisco, hiking, movies, bars, etc., and we’re hoping to go surfing and wine-tasting in the upcoming weeks. My roommate is also within this “cool person group” (as we humbly call ourselves). Now that his gf is gone, I’ve gotten to know him better and he’s a really cool guy. The other people in the cool person group are mostly from Urbana-Champagne, and Carnegie Mellon, with a few from random places including UNC (who apparently I met once, last year!).
Our last major trip was to San Francisco, the area of Haight Street. Basically with a lot of cool shops and restaurants, and close to Haight park, this was a really fun trip. The park is awesome, with a bunch of hippies in it, singing and dancing and shit (and also selling just about every drug imaginable =)). We also went to Amoeba Music, a huge record store which contains a giant number of new and used CDs and DVDs. Since many of the used items were as low as $2, I ended up buying 8 CDs from there. Although it felt odd actually buying music, I didn’t feel too bad, as most of it was very cheap, very hard to find, and worthy artists who deserve what little money they made from those purchases. Finally, for dinner, we went to this awesome little Persian restaurant that turned into a night-club, complete with belly dancing and hookah smoking. It was some serious good times.
For the 4th of July weekend, I was in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a friend’s wedding. She’s actually the cousin of my best friends from India (who I’ve known since we were 3). His family lives in India and he’s currently working in Poland for the year with AIESEC, of which he’s quite a senior member now. It had been over 3 years since I had seen him, so it was so great to see and talk to him (albeit for such a short time). The wedding went off very well, and it was a lot of fun (like all Indian weddings are).
I’ve also been working hard on audiomatch, getting ready for the release of version 2, which should hopefully work like the original version 1 was supposed to (heh), with many additional features. I’m hoping to get it done by the end of the summer, and assuming Roy can find some time to work on it too, we should be releasing it sometime in August. In addition to this, I’ve also been working on (or at least spending a lot of time thinking about) various other projects. Most are programming-type projects, and I’ll give more details once I’ve worked out stuff more thoroughly. If you’re a computer science major and would like to work with me on any project with me, please leave a message and we can work something out.
In lieu of watching a lot of movies (which I normally do at Tech), I’ve been listening to a lot of music. I have a large amount of music on CD which I haven’t had time to listen to fully, and so I’m taking full advantage of this summer to do that. Tied into this is my new efforts to starting reviewing music and so on (as outlined in the sticky post on the top of the page). Expect more updates on the music page every week, although probably not many on the movies page until Tech starts up again.
Other miscellanous things: the weather is still amazingly good here, and it’s yet to rain on a day yet. Tomorrow I’ll be heading over with some co-workers to this pub that has these incredibly spicy habanero burgers (so spicy that if you finish it, you get this sticker: [Link]. Hopefully I’ll be getting one =)
Also, I’ve been talking to lots of people here about working at a computer game company after I graduate, and I’ll let you know more about my thoughts on that later on.
